Frequently Asked Questions

Q - How many songs have you written?

A - Around 700 that I can name, though there are more that I have forgotten about.

Q - What do you consider your best song?

A -  Usually the last one I've recorded.

Q - How often do you write a song?

A - About four times a week, a bit more when I'm doing an album.  But I have to add that I only end up recording about 20% of the songs that I write, as most of them aren't good enough to bother with.

Q - How long does it take you to write a song?

A - The melodies usually happen in less than five minutes.  The lyrics can take up to an hour or so.

Q - Do you play all the instruments on your recordings?

A - 99% of the time, yes, but if anyone else is playing on the track, that person will be credited.

Q - How many instruments do you play?

A - Play? Or play well?  I've used about two dozen different types of instruments on the recordings.

Q - What was your first instrument?

A - I started playing the harmonica when I was about 18 or 19 years old.

Q - How long does it take you to record a song?

A - A typical song takes about 8 to 10 hours to record, mix and master.

Q - When did you write your first song?

A - The first ones that I can remember writing were when I was in the first grade.

Q - How much formal music education do you have?

A - None.

Q - In the studio, do you read the music or use charts?

A - Neither, as I can't read music and I wouldn't know how to write out a chart.  I will jot down the chords of the song if I'm having trouble remembering them.  And I always have a copy of the lyrics in front of me when I'm doing the vocals.

Q - Is your music for sale anywhere?

A - No.
